As short but sweet update on the UVSS's legal action against the CFS to start the new year.
Back in November the UVSS board decided to take the CFS to court to obtain a membership referendum. Tomorrow, January 6, the UVSS meets the CFS in the Supreme Court of British Columbia to settle the matter.
In the fall of 2009 a group of students, which included several students who are now board members, collected a petition containing signatures from 11.4% of UVSS members. Around the same time a counter-petition that stated students wished to have their names removed from any such petition was also circulated. In March 2010, the CFS informed the UVSS the required threshold of signatures (10%) had not been met, apparently as a result of the counter-petition.
It is expected that the court case will focus on the legal standing of the counter-petition that was collected as well as the $200 000+ debt the CFS claims the UVSS owes from 1998-99. It is expect the case will be resolved by the end of the day. Check back soon to hear results of the case.
Take it to 'em UVSS!
