The 2011 election will feature two slates, as occurs during most years. This year's slates are Renew and Fuse. At this time it is unclear if Fuse is intended to be an acronym for anything or is just simply the word 'Fuse'. Renew, like last year, is a reference to Renewing the UVSS.
There is also two Independents running in this Election: Remy Hall and Ryan Levis.
Here are the candidates in for the 2011 UVSS Election:
Renew
Executives
Chairperson - Rachel Chapman
Finance and Operations - Desi Brisbin
External - Roy Nam
Student Affairs - Lauren Petersen
Directors at Large
Tessah Clark
David Foster
Chris Hacket
Sam Hagen
Alec Hermansson
Allison Rhodes
Zoe Staples
Gabrielle Sutherland
Note: The candidacy of Chris Hacket and Zoe Staples cannot be confirmed at this time due to issues surrounding their nomination forms.
Fuse
Executives
Chairperson - Tara Paterson
Finance and Operations - Dylan Sherlock
Student Affairs - Jenn Bowie
External - Jaraad Marani
Directors at Large
Hafeez Ali Dhalla
Charles Freund
Nadia Hamden
Lucia Orser
Emily Rogers
Samantha Scott
Ariel Tseng
Independents
Events - Remy Hall
Chairperson - Ryan Levis
As the official election campaign does not start until February 28, I see little reason to give much commentary at this time. We do not know what platforms these candidates are running on and probably will not know until the election period.
It is interesting that both slates are roughly the same size and both decided not to run a candidate against Remy Hall for the Director of Events position. With no slate running 11 Director at Large candidates, the board is guaranteed to have representation from both slates next year. I tend to see this as a good thing.
Also of note are the implications of blogger David Foster as a candidate. As a result of the UVSS's restrictive Elections Policy, it is quite unlikely that we will see much new content on Eye on the UVSS during this election.
The UVSS Elections Desk would like to make its first projection of the 2011 Election campaign.
ReplyDeleteWith 0% of the precincts reporting, we would like to announce Remy Hall has been re-elected as the Director of Events. We base this on our pre-pre-entrance polling data, where the vast majority of those polled indeed agreed that "Remy Hall would do a better job than nobody."
We will have this updated on the magic screen shortly.

This also means that I, like James Coccola and Rajpreet Sall, is officially done with the UVSS!
ReplyDeleteIt was a great a run and I had fun, but it's time to call it quits before student politics consumes my life. May all of you who supported (or hated) me live a long and prosperous life. Sayonara!
Can you explain what is happening with Chris Hackett and Zoe Staples? Hasn't the CEO released who is running. Either they are or they aren't.
ReplyDeleteTheir candidacies are being appealed. Hackett's form did not have an email address on it. Staples' was missing a signature at the deadline.
ReplyDeleteMy guess is that Hackett will be reinstated but Staples will not.
Another thing to consider, on top of Kelsey's rationale, is that Rajpreet Sall began serving as Director of Academics in January 2010 because of a vacancy in the position, as opposed to May when the other execs did. Bylaws strictly prevent an executive serving more than 2 years in that capacity, so why would Raj bother running to serve a half-term anyways? Seems a bit silly when you think about it.
ReplyDeleteOn top of that, you need to consider that all these executives have served two terms on the board, which is a serious time commitment. They've taken a reduced number of classes to devote work to serving as D@Ls, and then about one class a semester to be able to fit in a full work week as executives. It's a lot of time and effort, and a lot of extra time added to your degree. To add to that, James Coccola could have graduated in 2010, but decided to stay an extra year to run for and serve as Chairperson. I honestly can't blame him, or anyone else, for wanting to move on with their lives. There's more to life than the UVSS, after all.
As for those who have served one term as a D@L and don't wish to continue, they have their reasons. People have schoolwork commitments, personal issues, etc. that prevent them from running. I know some of the D@Ls well enough to know that their reasons for not seeking another term were very much related to things outside of student politics.
People commenting here need to realize that there is a world outside of the UVSS that affects everyone, and to stop making issues where there are none.
As I mention in my latest post, candidates cannot campaign until February 28 when the official campaign period opens.
ReplyDeleteSimply acknowledging your candidacy online can constitute breaking this rule and potentially result in disqualification.
That means candidates cannot respond to the criticism made of them by anonymous commenters. I recognize that this is rather unfair.
Effective immediately and until February 28, I will not approve any further comments that attack a candidate running in this election since they cannot respond. Any that have been approved will be removed.
Andrew,
ReplyDeleteAre you deleting the comments because of that or because you are supporting renew? Several people have stated that they heard a renew candidate telling people that your blog is a good campaign tool for them and that you drove them to school with their senate banners.
a) It is absolutely because candidates cannot respond to criticisms.
ReplyDeleteb) This was intended to be a merely informative post. It was not an invitation to start arguing and attacking candidates before the election.
c) I have been planning on creating a commenting policy for a couple weeks now.
d) There will be plenty of opportunity to argue and criticize candidates and slates on here once the election begins.
e) I will be endorsing specific candidates, not slates.
f) I cannot control what candidates say about me or my blog.
g) The claim about senate banners is false. I am on an off campus practicum this semester.
h) You would have more credibility if you signed your name.
Now you're just drunk with power Andrew.
