Clubs booking policy: Be careful what you wish for

In early January 2011 the unrecognized DKE fraternity chapter at UVic held a bottle drive to raise money for baby Molly Campbell. The bottle drive occurred in front of the SUB as this location was booked by a campus club who's purpose was unrelated to the fraternity chapter.

A number of students questioned why this was allowable and thus a proposed change to clubs policy was brought to the board. This policy would prevent outside organizations from booking tables and spaces and would also prevent clubs from booking events that did not have anything to do with the purpose of their club. This new policy passed without much issue.

Fast forward to the present and CFS Yes side representative Katy Carr has discovered the implications of this policy. It was also reposted by UVic Underground.Carr accuses the UVSS of being "evil, despicable and oppressive" for not allowing the CFS to book a table through a club unrelated to the CFS.

This appears to be a case of "be careful what you wish for." If we want to prevent one outside organisation from booking tables through unrelated clubs, then this policy should apply to all cases of this happening. That is exactly what has occurred here.

  1. The CFS is a recognized group on campus. The fraternity and sorority are not. Big difference.

  2. One critical difference: every undergraduate is a member of the CFS. The frats are a tiny club.

  4. CFS isn't an outside an organization. We (and yes I am a UVic Student) are all members. I pay my UVSS fee and find it despicable that instead of allowing CFS to have a table in the interest of democratic discourse people like yourself are stifling debate. If all your rhetoric about CFS not allowing student voices to be heard was sincere you wouldn't be cheering on these stalinist tactics

  5. Katy Carr's pretty cute but it's too bad the Board DID vote on this. Sorry Katy but rules are rules.

  6. I'm not cheering these tactics. I am merely stating that this is the policy in place that was passed by the board of directors.

Many times the UVSS creates short sighted policies in response to a specific situation without considering how it will be applied in a more general context.

  7. The CFS is not a student club, it is a organization which the UVSS is a part of, and a fair number of students wish out of. If the CFS wished to have a I AM CFS Club it should have made one. Tough for them :D
